Department of English Language Theory and Practice – Center for Linguistics, Translation Studies and In-depth Study of English

The Department of English Language Theory and Practice guides students to in-depth study of the foundations of linguistics, translation theory, linguoculturology and the English language. The curriculum covers phonetics, morphology, syntax, pragmatics, translation studies and intercultural communication. Students consolidate theoretical knowledge through practical lessons, seminars, translation projects and scientific conferences. The scientific activity of the department is aimed at developing English language teaching methods, researching new areas of linguistics and increasing cultural competence. Graduates are successfully working in the fields of education, translation, international relations and scientific research.

Department History

Establishment

The Department of Theory and Practice of the English Language was established in 2021, and its first head was Associate Professor Azizbek Muhammedov. The main staff of the department consists of 17 professors and teachers. From the first years, the department began to teach, along with English, the literature of countries where English is studied, in particular, England and the Americas.
 

Development stages

The department expanded its educational and scientific activities in a short period of time and began to actively participate in the reform of curricula within the framework of the PRESETT (“Preparing Future English Teachers in Uzbekistan”) project, which was jointly conducted by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the British Council. The department also conducts scientific research in areas such as the comparative study of English and Uzbek languages, translation studies, and comparative literature. During 2021–2023, 10 professors and teachers of the department advanced their qualifications at the universities of Norwich and Portsmouth in the UK.
 

Current activities

Today, the department is headed by Associate Professor Anora Jabborova. In-depth courses are held in linguistics, theoretical aspects of language, and English and American literature during the study process. The department cooperates with such higher educational institutions as Samarkand State University of Foreign Languages, Uzbekistan State University of World Languages, and Tashkent State Pedagogical University named after Nizami. Also, as part of international cooperation, regular advanced training, joint scientific projects, and experience exchange are ongoing at universities in the UK.
