Department History

Establishment

The admission of students to the biology department at Jizzakh State Pedagogical University began in 1979, and during this period the biology department operated as part of the Department of Fundamentals of Natural Sciences. The first head of the department was Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor Toshtemir Boykobilov. In subsequent years, Professor Murod Rasulov, Associate Professor Said Esonkulov, Associate Professor Ergash Sulaymonov, and Professor Khudargan Mavlonov were appointed to the leadership of the department, who made a significant contribution to its development.

In 1997, several independent departments were established on the basis of the Department of Fundamentals of Natural Sciences, including the Department of Zoology and Anatomy. This department specializes in teaching courses in zoology, anatomy, physiology, and ecology, as well as conducting scientific research.

Development Stages

Over the years, the department has undergone various changes in its name and structure. At some times, it operated as part of the Department of Fundamentals of Medical Knowledge or the Department of Fundamentals of Zoology and Medical Knowledge. In each period, scientific research was expanded and attention was paid to improving the quality of practical training.

In 2004–2012, under the leadership of Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Umarqul Rahmonkulov, the department actively participated in scientific projects and grants. Later, it was equipped with modern laboratory equipment and field practices for students were systematically established.

Current activities

Currently, the Department of Zoology and Anatomy provides education at the bachelor’s and master’s levels. The department teaches such subjects as zoology, anatomy, physiology, hygiene, ecology, and wildlife protection. Fieldwork for students is also conducted in the Zamin and Nurota state reserves, as well as other natural areas. Scientific work is mainly focused on studying the biological diversity of the animal world, environmental problems and ways to solve them.
